Supabase: open-source backend as a service

·1 min read

Supabase has become the most popular open-source alternative to Firebase. It offers a complete backend suite: PostgreSQL database, authentication, file storage, real-time APIs, and edge functions.

PostgreSQL at the center

Unlike Firebase's NoSQL database, Supabase is built on PostgreSQL. You get joins, transactions, indexes, views, and full SQL power. Supabase extends PostgreSQL with auto-generated REST and GraphQL APIs via PostgREST and pg_graphql.

Authentication and storage

Supabase Auth supports email/password, OAuth (Google, GitHub, Apple, etc.), and magic links. PostgreSQL Row Level Security policies integrate directly, providing row-level access control without additional logic.

File storage supports images, videos, and documents with built-in image transformations and RLS-based security policies.

Realtime and edge functions

Realtime subscriptions use WebSocket to sync database changes with clients. Edge Functions run on Deno and can process webhooks, validate data, and extend backend logic.

Supabase lets you build complete applications without managing servers. At Vynta, we develop digital products on Supabase, combining PostgreSQL power with serverless development speed.
