Google Tag Manager: setup and essential tags

·1 min read

What is Google Tag Manager?

GTM is a tag management system that lets you add and update tracking snippets without modifying your website code.

Containers

Each website has a GTM container. You can have multiple containers for different environments: development, staging, and production.

Basic components

Tags

The snippets you want to execute: Google Analytics 4, Facebook Pixel, Hotjar, etc.

Triggers

Define when a tag fires: page view, click, submit, scroll depth.

Variables

Store dynamic values: URL, product ID, clicked button text.

Essential tags

GA4 Config, GA4 Event, Facebook CAPI, Google Ads Conversion Tracking, and LinkedIn Insight Tag are the most common.

Naming strategy

Define a naming convention for tags, triggers, and variables. Example: GA4 - Event - Newsletter Signup.

Debug mode

Use GTM Preview to verify your tags fire correctly before publishing.

Conclusion

GTM simplifies tracking management. At Vynta we configure Google Tag Manager with scalable architectures that let you add new tags without developer dependency.
