What are traditional servers?
Traditional servers — whether dedicated hardware, VPS instances, or container orchestration on Kubernetes — run your application continuously.
Pros:
- Predictable performance with no cold starts
- Full control over the execution environment
- No execution time limits
- Stateful applications can run in-process
- Established tooling and monitoring ecosystems
Cons:
- Pay for capacity, not usage — idle servers still cost money
- Scaling requires manual configuration or auto-scaling rules
- Server management overhead (OS updates, security patches)
- Over-provisioning for traffic spikes is wasteful
When serverless wins
Serverless excels for APIs with variable traffic, event-driven workloads, image processing, webhook handlers, and applications where usage is unpredictable. A startup's MVP is a classic use case — zero traffic costs nothing, and a viral post is handled automatically.
Edge functions (Cloudflare Workers, Vercel Edge) extend serverless to run at CDN edge locations, reducing latency for global audiences.
When traditional servers win
Traditional servers win for long-running processes, WebSocket-intensive applications, workloads with predictable high traffic, and applications requiring specialized hardware (GPUs for ML inference).
Enterprise applications with strict compliance requirements often prefer traditional servers for their predictable audit trails and network controls.
The hybrid approach
Many production systems use both: traditional servers for stable workloads and serverless functions for variable or event-driven tasks. A typical pattern is a traditional API server with serverless functions for image processing, email sending, or webhook handling.
