The monitoring battle
Datadog and Grafana are the most popular platforms for infrastructure and application monitoring. Both offer dashboards, alerts, and metric visualization, but with different approaches.
Datadog
Full SaaS including metrics, logs, tracing, APM, infrastructure monitoring, and synthetics. All in one integrated platform. Fast setup with agents.
Pros: total integration, smart alerts, ML anomaly detection, enterprise support.
Cons: expensive, vendor lock-in, complex host-based pricing.
Grafana
Open source. Grafana is the visualizer; you need to combine it with Prometheus (metrics), Loki (logs), and Tempo (tracing). More flexibility but more setup.
Pros: free, self-hosted, large community, highly customizable dashboards.
Cons: more configuration, less sophisticated alerts, infrastructure maintenance.
Quick comparison
| Aspect | Datadog | Grafana Stack | |--------|---------|---------------| | Pricing | $$$ | $ (infra separate) | | Setup | Minutes | Days | | Integration | All-in-one | Prometheus + Loki + Tempo | | Scalability | Managed | You manage | | Alerts | Advanced | Basic |
Which to choose?
Choose Datadog if you have budget and want a complete solution without managing infrastructure. Choose Grafana if you need full control, limited budget, or are on AWS/Azure.
