Why code review matters
Code review is not just about finding bugs. It's an opportunity to share knowledge, maintain quality standards, and prevent issues before they reach production. A good review process strengthens the entire team.
What to look for in a review
Focus on three levels: design (is the solution correct?), functionality (does the code do what it should?), and readability (would another developer understand it?). Don't get lost in style details if you already have a linter configured.
How to give constructive feedback
Use a respectful and specific tone. Instead of "this is wrong", try "did you consider using an early return here to reduce nesting?". Ask questions, don't make statements. Acknowledge good code when you see it.
Ideal PR size
Small PRs (under 400 lines) are reviewed better and faster. A 2000-line PR rarely gets a thorough review. Break large changes into atomic PRs.
Reviewer checklist
- Does the code follow project patterns?
- Are there tests covering the change?
- Is the documentation updated?
- Does it handle errors and edge cases properly?
- Does it avoid introducing unnecessary technical debt?
