Clerk vs Auth0: authentication alternatives for your app

·1 min read

Clerk and Auth0 are the most popular authentication-as-a-service platforms. Both solve the complex problem of authentication, but with different approaches.

Auth0: maturity and customization

Auth0 is the most mature platform, supporting OAuth 2.1, OIDC, SAML, LDAP, multi-factor authentication, and custom rules. Its Action extensions (serverless functions) allow deep flow customization. However, its complexity can be overwhelming for small projects.

Clerk: simplicity and UX

Clerk focuses on developer experience with pre-built components (sign-in, user profile, organization switcher) that integrate in minutes. It supports social auth, magic links, MFA, and multi-tenant organization. Clerk is more expensive at high volumes but offers better out-of-the-box experience.

Pricing comparison

Auth0 offers 7,000 free active users, then $23/1000 users. Clerk offers 10,000 free users, then $20/1000 users. Both scale pricing with advanced features like MFA and enterprise SSO.

When to choose each

Choose Clerk if you prioritize development speed, have a B2C product, or need ready-made UI components. Choose Auth0 if you need enterprise integrations (SAML, LDAP), deep customization, or strict compliance requirements.

Authentication shouldn't be a headache. At Vynta, we integrate Clerk, Auth0, or the solution that best fits your product and budget.
