What is CI/CD?

A typical CI/CD pipeline

3. Test: automated tests run — unit tests, integration tests, linting, type checking. If any test fails, the pipeline stops and notifies the team.

5. Deploy to production: for continuous deployment, the build automatically goes to production. For continuous delivery, it waits for manual approval.

Common CI/CD mistakes
Tests that pass locally but fail in CI: usually caused by environment differences. Use the same Node version, same operating system, and same dependency versions in CI as in development.
Slow pipelines: if your pipeline takes 30 minutes, developers stop waiting for results. Optimize by running tests in parallel, caching dependencies, and splitting test suites.
Deploying failing builds: your pipeline should fail if any step fails. Don't configure "continue on error" for critical steps.
No rollback plan: every deployment should have a rollback strategy. Know how to revert to a previous version quickly.
