Canary Releases: risk-free gradual deployments

·1 min read

What are canary releases?

Canary release is a deployment strategy where a new version is deployed to a small subset of users before reaching everyone. If everything works well, traffic is gradually increased.

Routing strategies

  • Traffic percentage: 5% → 25% → 50% → 100%.
  • Internal users first: QA team, then employees, then 1% of users, etc.
  • Segment-based: users in a specific region, plan, etc.
  • Feature flag combination: combine canary with feature flags for granular control.

Monitoring during canary

Compare metrics between canary and stable: latency, error rate, throughput, CPU/memory usage. If metrics degrade, roll back automatically.

Canary vs Blue-Green

Blue-green: two complete environments, instant switch. Canary: gradual, requires more monitoring but detects problems with limited impact.

Benefits

  • Limited impact if the version has bugs.
  • Production validation with real traffic.
  • Instant rollback without downtime.
  • Confidence in frequent deployments.
