AWS vs Vercel vs traditional hosting: choosing the right deployment strategy

Vercel: best for frontend applications

Vercel was created by the team behind Next.js, so it's the natural choice for Next.js projects. It offers automatic deployment from Git, serverless functions, edge functions, and a global CDN.

  • Automatic preview deployments for every branch
  • Built-in analytics and speed insights
  • Generous free tier
  • Automatic SSL and custom domains

Cons:

  • Less control over server configuration
  • Can become expensive at scale
  • Not ideal for backend-heavy applications
  • Limited to serverless compute

Best for: Next.js applications, static sites, Jamstack projects, frontend-heavy applications.

AWS: most flexible and scalable

Amazon Web Services offers the widest range of services — EC2 for virtual servers, Lambda for serverless, S3 for storage, CloudFront for CDN, RDS for databases, and dozens more.

Pros:

  • Complete control over infrastructure
  • Scales to any size
  • Most extensive service catalog
  • Enterprise-grade security and compliance

Cons:

  • Steep learning curve
  • Easy to accidentally overspend
  • Requires dedicated DevOps expertise
  • Configuration is complex and time-consuming

Best for: Large-scale applications, enterprise projects, applications with complex backend requirements, teams with DevOps experience.

Traditional hosting: simple and predictable

Traditional hosting includes shared hosting, VPS (Virtual Private Server), and dedicated servers from providers like DigitalOcean, Linode, Hetzner, or traditional cPanel-based hosts.

Pros:

  • Predictable monthly pricing
  • Full server access (with VPS and dedicated)
  • Simpler mental model
  • Good for PHP/WordPress applications

Cons:

  • Manual server management required
  • Scaling requires manual intervention
  • No built-in CI/CD
  • Less performant global delivery without CDN setup

Best for: WordPress sites, simple web applications, teams that prefer full control, projects with predictable traffic.

Making the right choice

Consider these factors when deciding:

Team expertise: if your team knows Next.js but not DevOps, Vercel is the obvious choice. If you have experienced DevOps engineers, AWS offers more flexibility.

Traffic patterns: unpredictable traffic with potential spikes favors serverless platforms (Vercel, AWS Lambda) that scale automatically. Predictable traffic works well with fixed-cost VPS hosting.

Backend requirements: if your application has a heavy backend with complex processing, database connections, or background jobs, AWS or a VPS may be more appropriate than serverless.

Budget: traditional hosting offers the most predictable costs. Vercel and AWS can be very affordable at low scale but costs grow with usage.

The hybrid approach

Many teams use a combination. A Next.js frontend on Vercel, a Node.js API on AWS Elastic Beanstalk or a DigitalOcean VPS, and a managed database service like Supabase or AWS RDS.

This lets each part of the stack run on the infrastructure that suits it best.
