Turborepo: efficient monorepos for development teams

·1 min read

Introduction

Turborepo is a build tool for JavaScript/TypeScript monorepos. Created by Vercel, it focuses on intelligent caching and parallelization for fast builds.

Intelligent Caching

Turborepo caches the results of every task. If inputs haven't changed, it uses the cached result. Caching works locally and in CI without additional configuration.

Parallelization

Executes tasks in parallel respecting project dependencies. While Webpack builds project A, ESLint can analyze project B simultaneously.

Dependency Graph

Define the pipeline in turbo.json: which scripts exist and their dependencies. Turborepo executes in the correct order, maximizing parallelism.

Vercel Integration

Turborepo integrates natively with Vercel for remote caching. Teams share cache: if someone built main, everyone gets the result.

Minimal Configuration

With just a 10-line turbo.json and a package.json, you have a working monorepo. The learning curve is minimal.

Conclusion

Turborepo is the simplest option to start with monorepos. At Vynta, we use Turborepo for small to medium teams that need fast builds.
